Definitions
The following are definitions of key terms used in this Survey.

Small Business
A business with revenues of 10 million or less dollars and 100 or less employees.

Accounts Receivable/Accounts Payable Clerk
An individual responsible for processing sales and receipts and/or purchases and payments.

Bookkeeper
An individual involved in processing sales and receipts, purchases and payments, payroll, making accounting adjustments, maintaining the General Ledger, and preparing financial reports. A full charge bookkeeper is one who performs or supervises all of the aforementioned processes.

Accountant
An individual who has obtained an accredited accounting education, such as an accounting degree.

Payroll Specialist
An individual who specializes in processing payroll and/or payroll tax returns

NBA Regions
The Survey asks the participant to identify his/her geographical location by region. NBA divides the United States into five geographical regions as follows:

  1. Midwest - Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
  2. Northwest - Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming.
  3. Northeast - Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
  4. Southeast - Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
  5. Southwest - Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah.

The Survey responses are listed according to these regions.

Qualification
NBA's Bookkeeping, Accounting, and Payroll National Salary Survey is not a scientific survey. A representative sample of bookkeepers, accountants, and payroll specialists are invited to participate in the Survey via press releases, email, direct mail, and telephone.

Press releases are sent to local media; email is sent to NBA state association's collective email database, direct mail is sent to over 10,000 small businesses, and we called 500 small businesses. Thus, the Survey includes a comprehensive representation of bookkeepers, accountants, and payroll specialists.

The 2007 Survey includes the following number of responses based on NBA Regions:
